Switching to Rapidshare for now, it seems more reliable than Mediafire. Unless you have Rapidshare Pro you can only download one file at a time which is a bit of a bummer, but it's a small price to pay I reckon.

Today we have come to the very last Friday Mix I finished before my computer exploded back in October. It was the one I was the most sorry to see go, as I knew it was one of the best I've ever made but I couldn't for the life of me remember what tracks were on it, except for a couple of them. The only copy that existed was on that hard drive, and alas it was gone forever and many a tear was shed at Snusgrop Manor.

Then I got the computer back and it turned out everything was just fine. Nothing to worry about. And now I finally get to share it with you. Top shit.

I've praised the golden pipes of Jonah Jenkins before on this blog (here to be precise) and on this mix is yet another example of why he's one my favorite singers of all time - he does lead vocals on Converge's Grim Heart/Black Rose, elevating an already good song to ridiculous heights. That song alone is worth downloading this mix for.

PS. The correct answer to yesterday's movie quiz was The Son of Kong (1933). Anonymous came awfully close with Mighty Joe Young. Well done.

Keen-eyed readers will have already noticed I posted almost the same message in a post on the other blog. A post which features a fucking incredible New Order song. I'm currently reading Peter Hook's The Haçienda: How Not To Run A Club so I'm digging out all of that old Manchester shit.

The same book made me watch Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll yesterday, starring Andy Serkis as Ian Dury. Not sure if Ian Dury ever played The Haçienda, but he probably did. If he didn't, it doesn't matter because Andy Serkis played Martin Hannett in 24 Hour Party People so there's still a connection. So there.

Alan F has some great Haçienda shit right here, by the way.

Anywho:

In case you missed the memo, my Mediafire account got wiped clean the other day, without warning or explanation. Very odd. Very annoying. And apparently it's happened to others as well.

No better way to demonstrate my current state of mind than with a depressing photograph and a band called "Negativland".

For Those Aboot To Rock: Live At The Commodore is one of those live DVDs that work a lot better with just the audio.

The band is on fire as usual and they sound fucking fantastic (I refuse to believe that nothing was added or re-recorded in post - they sound too perfect), but the production of the DVD itself isn't terribly interesting. It's not bad, just bland, flat and dull. Poor editing and it looks like it was shot on regular home video cameras. In fact, I find watching this DVD actually detracts from the actual live performance. A band this good deserved a better live DVD.

Would it surprise you to learn that I'm quite pleased with this week's mix? It's not hubris if you really are as brilliant as you think you are.

It starts off quite rocky and punky, and gets heavier and stonerier towards the end. I'm pretty sure "stonerier" is a word.

A big glowing highlight is Year of the Goat's Dark Lord, one of very best songs of last year. It's almost too good. So good I had no choice but put it last because it wouldn't be fair to any song to have to follow such a glorious piece of work.

If it teaches us anything, it's that Bill's backing vocals are sick. Just listen to that fucker roar in Blood and Thunder and March of the Fire Ants. He sounds like Dave Edwardson from Neurosis. Holy hell. If he doesn't sing lead on at least one song on the next album I'm gonna find out where he lives and headbutt him in the tits.

Red Fang - Murder the Mountains

In a year that gave us no new Melvins or Big Business albums (only a slightly disappointing single by the latter), Red Fang filled the burly rock gap nicely. Try to think of a more Melvins-ish song title than "Dirt Wizard". Go on, I dare ya.

Syphilitic Vaginas - Alpha Antichrist

When I want to listen to a Swedish guy pretending to be a whole group of Japanese maniacs who play a god awful old school amalgamation of death metal, black metal, thrash metal, and heavy metal with dollop of good ol' crust punk just for the hell of it, Syphilitic Vaginas is one of the first acts I turn to.

Never has a band name taken from a GISM song felt more appropriate. An album smothered in layers of filth and grime as unsettling as the name of the band would suggest.

Puscifer - Conditions of My Parole

While I've always enjoyed Maynard James Keenan's silly little sideprject Puscifer, I've seldom regarded it as anything but just that: a silly little sideproject. A brightly coloured funhouse for him to play around in when he's not busy with Tool, A Perfect Circle and wine making.

But this year they stepped up to the plate in a most unexpected way and by taking things a bit more seriously (but just a bit - album cover is all kinds of awesome), they managed to produce an album which you don't have to wear irony-tinted glasses to enjoy. The best shit on here is on par with A Perfect Circle's finer moments, and coming from a big APC fan such as myself, that's one helluva compliment.

While we're on the subject: if Tool and APC don't release new material in 2012, I'm gonna have a hissy bitch fit of biblical proportions. This is an official warning.

Giant Squid - Cenotes

Giant Squid's follow up to their masterpiece The Ichthyologist (the fifth best album of 2009 according to yours truly) is leaner, meaner, darker, more stripped down, and more introverted than its wild predecessor.

It doesn't quite massage my prostate like The Ichthyologist did, but if you're looking for psychedelic, proggy, doomy, and sludgy yet sophisticated rock that constantly throws curveballs in your dumb face, these are still your go-to guys. And girls.

Illuminatus - Glasnost

A very late comer to this list who bumped Tombs off the top 20 in the eleventh hour. A band I was literally only introduced to for the very first time this past week. I was told this album sounded like latter day Paradise Lost and mid-era Anathema crossed with early Tool. I was immediately intrigued and fuck me sideways with a broomstick if that description wasn't kind of dead on. Good shit.

Digging the Magritte-esque cover art too.

Cave In - White Silence

Some of the heaviest and noisiest shit they've released in years, then suddenly an acoustic Beatles-y ditty out of nowhere. Awesome. Sing My Loves is a strong contender for song of the year.

Foo Fighters - Wasting Light

I admit I wasn't too impressed with Wasting Light when I first heard it. All the talk of their back-to-the-roots approach of recording on two inch tape a garage with Butch Vig and how this process invigorated the band felt exciting until I heard the album and concluded it just sounded like another fucking overproduced radio friendly Foo Fighters record.

But after the dust of disappointment had settled, I realised that this truly is their best album since The Colour and the Shape. Bob Mould is on it. Nuff said.

Entrails - The Tomb Awaits

I'm all for wearing your influences on your sleeve, but Entrails' love for Entombed is just ridiculous. Look at that fucking album cover. Look at that fucking logo. On Unleashed Wrath they even play the outro from Left Hand Path note for note.

Just when we needed no more proof that Swedes do melodic retro rock with psychedelic pop flourishes better than anyone else, this trio runs in and hits you over the head with that simple fact one more time. Just to make sure you get it, pendejo.

Bastard Priest - Ghouls of the Endless Night

I can appreciate modern, powerful and well produced death metal as much as anybody, but in the end I always find myself drawn to the kind that sounds like it was recorded on a boom box in a burnt out nuclear reactor in Poland in 1987. Bastard Priest fit that bill better than most.

Opeth - Heritage

Oh how the metal warriors, puritans of the status quo, huffed & puffed and got their labia in a twist over this one. So it sounds nothing like Blackwater Park or Morningrise, boo fucking hoo. Here's Mikael Åkerfeldt's cock, wipe your tears with it.

With all of the death metal out of the window (though other kinds of metal are still prevalent here and there), the focus instead shifted to the 60s and 70s prog side of the band. Not as easy to get into as their previous efforts, but Heritage is completely irresistable once the penny drops.

Opeth proved for the tenth time that they're leaders, not followers.

Maim - Deceased To Exist

The last few years have seen an ever increasing influx of Swedish death metal, old school style. Bastard Priest was one example, Maim is another, and (as you sneaky assholes who skipped ahead to see what album was at the top of the list already know) there's yet another example in the top 5.

I've already established this is my favorite kind of death metal, so I love said influx more than narrow-minded Opeth fans love posting emo comments about Heritage on Blabbermouth.

Amebix - Sonic Mass

When Stig and The Baron got together with Roy Mayorga to record the first Amebix album in 24 years everyone expected greatness. I wonder how many expected it to sound like Primordial meets Killing Joke. Though spiritually Amebebix is closer to those two than most bands so I suppose it makes more sense the more you think about it.

Comparisons with Celtic Frost are inevitable: both bands are influential on such a basic primal level that most bands don't even know they're influenced by them, the two key figures get back together with some new folks to record the first album in god knows how many years and the result, while fucking fantastic, sounds nothing like you expected.

Strange how we expect bands to sound like they just picked up where they left off all of those years ago when in reality they have evolved as people, musicians, songwriters and music fans like everyone else. If Amebix had never split up, and Stig hadn't moved to the Isle of Skye to become a sword smith (how more metal can you possibly get? Seriously, not even Primordial are that primordial) and instead contiuned to release a new album every two or three years through out the 90s and 00s, I'm convinced they would still sound the way they do in 2011.

Often confused for punks due to the black, spikey hair and leather, they came from the gluesniffing squat scene. The simplest explanation would the simple fact they were bad musicians releasing underprocuded records, but everything about them musically and lyrically were metal. In that sense they are the reverse Motörhead - Lemmy often said they saw them sevlves as a punk rock band and that is certainly what early Motörhead sounded like, but because they had long hair and wore denim jackets with band patches everyone assumed they were heavy metal.

Some even, without any shame whatsoever, lump them together with Saxon, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and other NWOBHM bands. Pathetic. Motörhead have always more in common with Chuck Berry than Iron Maiden, and I don't say that as comicial exaggeration to make a point, I mean it literally. If you ever meet Lemmy, tell him that and I promise to suck half of his warts if he disagrees.

Where was I? Oh yeah, Amebix.

For the same reasons it's folly to lump Amebix together with the crust/anarcho punks bands of the time, like Crass, Chaos UK and Disorder. Yes, I know Amebix shared members with those bands and other punk outfits at various points, but that's irrelevant and you know it.

Fucking hell, halfway around the world to make that one simple point. Not even sure it was worth it. Bottomline: Sonic Mass is great. Brevity is for posers.

Fair To Midland - Arrows & Anchors

I'm not entirely sure just how I was able to completely miss these guys for ten years, but better late than never. I was initially weary because their singer kept rubbing me the wrong way. Well, you blame me? Just look at the spazzy cunt. But the record quickly grew on me, and their singer does indeed possess some mean pipes. He's almost up there with Mike Patton in terms of vocal range.

I keep hearing flourishes of Dredg, Mars Volta, Karnivool, Helmet, Failure, Mew, Coheed & Cambria, Devin Townsend, System of a Down, Faith No More and even Clutch. Sometimes all of them at once, without ever sounding like they're ripping any of them off. A good example is Rikki Tikki Tavi which sounds like someone cut up a Coal Chamber song and a Queen song and pasted them together at random. Sounds fucking retarded, I know, but somehow they not only make it work, but also make it sound great.

A very strange record. And very, very good. I could've done without the four little interlude thingies though. On iTunes I had them taken out, making this a nice and tight eleven track forty-nine minute album. I suggest you do the same.

Jeremy Irons & The Ratgang Malibus - Bloom

The biggest discovery of 2001 for me, along with Illuminatus and Fair To Midland. Lush 70s retro rock which also manages to sound completely modern, and a singer who sounds virtually indentical to Jeff Buckley. Love at first sight.

Looking forward to following these guys and their careers for many years to come. Also looking forward to the copyright infringement lawsuit undoubtedly on its way from Jeremy Irons' legal team.

Mastodon - The Hunter

Not entirely sure why the, for lack of a better word, "playfulness" of this album came as a surprise to so many people. Anyone who's paid any kind of attention to Mastodon since day one would know that these are a bunch of goofy fuckers. Bearded, Star Wars-obsessed goofy fuckers with John Travolta tattoos.

No theme this time, just fucking 53 minutes of rocking out. No doubt the party album of the year - this album does many things to me, but the main thing is it quite simply makes me happy. Puts me a right fucking good mood. Every time I hear it I have a big, stupid grin on my face that just won't go away.

It's got the spaceyness and the maturity of Crack the Skye, the quick riffy goodness of Leviathan and the wild anything-goes wackiness of Blood Mountain. This album is too good for words. Some of the choruses on here are fucking HUGE.

In addition to perfectly combining the very best bits of the last three albums it sounds like they have, not unlike their Georgia brothers (and sister) in Kylesa, embraced their inner 90s alternative rock selves. But where Kylesa looked towards Nirvana and The Pixes, Mastodon turned to Soundgarden (Black Tongue), The Smashing Pumpkins (Thickening) and Alice In Chains (Dry Bone Valley). There's plenty of Queens of the Stone Age (Curl of the Burl), and spank my ass and pretend I'm your dad if Blasteroid doesn't sound like Foo Fighters at their most riotous.

Troy has stepped to up the plate big time, and appears to be channeling Chris Cornell in all the right places. His robot vocals on Bedazzled Fingernails are tits. Speaking of vocals, Brann's leads on Dry Bone Valley are fucking astonishing. Speaking of Dry Bone Valley, how fucking sweet is that Vangelis intro? Sounds like something straight out of Blade Runner.

I also hear lots of Pink Floyd in the slower tracks, like the Gilmour-ish tones in the intro to The Sparrow and the very On The Run-esque intro to Creature Lives. Which is probably my favorite track at the moment. It sounds nothing like Mastodon and I have no fucking clue what to make of it. I just know it kicks me in the nuts and reminds me of Arcade Fire.

I know nothing about deceased Brent's brother Brad, to whom the album is dedicated and named after, but the title track does seem like a helluva tribute. You can tell he's pouring his heart out completely in those two (three? four? I keep losing count) solos. Fuck those who say The Hunter doesn't have the emotional depth of Crack the Skye. Y'all niggas are wack. So wack.

The best album I've heard in years and it gets better every time I hear it. This could just as well be the album of the century for all I care. Fuck.

Here's another few examples of albums I've really, really dug in 2011, but still didn't make it onto my upcoming top 20. Imagine how fucking exciting this list is if these didn't even make the cut! Fucking hell!

For those of you who, rather like yours truly, wishes Aerosmith had died in a hotel fire in 1975 before pissing on the legacy of the first three album, Rival Sons is a real treats. Out of all of the retro rockers making the rounds these days, it's nice to have at least one taking most of their cues from the early years of "The Bad Boys from Boston".

Will Haven's Harvesting Our Burdens has to be my favorite among these five, as it probably has the most twisted, fucked up riff I've heard all year. Guitarist Jeff Irwin schools all of the abominable djent brats active today on how to write and perform a Fredrik Thordendal riff better than Fredrik Thordendal.

I've been getting reports that my busted computer (on which all of my shit is stored, I really should do backups every now and then) is on the mend. When, and if, I get it back I can resume posting as usual. Until then, here's a blast from the past. A post originally posted in March 2007 on my very first blog, then reposted in slightly modified form on Metal Bastard Goes Soft in December 2009. Third time's a charm, eh?

This story begins in Detroit in 1964.

A gentleman by the name of Scott Morgan was the lead singer and guitarist of a garage band called The Rationals. They never had a big hit, altough the single Respect (recorded a year before Aretha Franklin scored big time with her own version) did break the Billboard 100 in 1966.

After the band parted ways in 1970, Morgan joined forces with MC5’s Fred Smith, Gary Rassmussen of the band Up and wild-man Scott Asheton from The Stooges to form Sonic’s Rendesvouz Band (which I will from here on refer to as “SRB”, because it’s just too damn long).

The band only ever released one single before they split up, but over the years a cult following grew. Bootleg live albums were traded and rock ‘n’ rollers world wide drooled over this supergroup, full of Detroit rock royalty. One of these rock ‘n’ rollers was Nick Royale of Swedish rock heroes The Hellacopters, a band greatly influenced by the Detroit scene of the 1970’s. On the vinyl version of their second album Payin’ The Dues (1997), they included a cover of SRB’s City Slang.

This did not go unnoticed and soon Scott Morgan became friends with The Hellacopters. In 1998 Nick got together with two member of the Dutch rock band The Nitwitz to form the project The Hydromatics, which basically started as a SRB tribute band. Scott Morgan was asked to perform the vocals on the recording and the resulting album, 1999’s Parts Unknown, is an amalgamation of SRB classics and original material, with an MC5 cover thrown in for good measure.

In September 1999 The Hellacopters got their asses on a plane to New York to record two SRB songs with Scott for a single on SubPop Records. These two songs, 16 With A Bullet and Slow Down (Take A Look), were later included on the Hellacopters rarities compilation Cream Of The Crap Vol. 2 in 2004. During these sessions Scott and Nick also collaborated on a new song, entitled Hurtin’ Time, which was later recorded by The Hellacopters for their 2000 album High Visibility. Still with me? Okay, good.

With Nick’s newfound love for classic soul and r’n'b, and Scott hailing from the soul capital of the world, The Solution took form in 2003. Demos of songs (including Monkeyboy which would later appear on The 'Copters' 2005 album Rock & Roll Is Dead) were sent back and forth across the Atlantic, and with a full album’s worth of material assembled, Nick & Scott got together in Atlantis Studios in Stockholm to record Communicate!, with a horn section, female back-up singers and the whole shebang.

The first single I Have To Quit You Baby became a top 10 hit in Sweden, and the album was greeted with well deserved rave reviews, with more than one reviewer drawing parallells to blue-eyed soul legends Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels. To make a soul album is a tricky thing for white people, and the fact that Communicate! sounds nothing like The Commitments is a monumental achievement.

Nick soon left The Hydromatics to focus on The Hellacopters, and The Solution released their second album Will Not Be Televised in 2007. Let's hope that Nick, now that The Hellacopters are no more, will give The Solution a more attention. And Death Breath too of course. We need another Death Breath album NOW!

Songs That Get My Juices Flowing #156 + some thoughts on the Best Album of 2011

Work on the Best Album of 2011 list has entered phase two and things are in high gear. It's a rough-ass job, but someone has to do it. And it might as well be me, just to make sure everything is in order.

Not quite sure yet if I'll make it a top 25 like in 2008 or a top 30 like in 2009. Probably a top 25. Or perhaps a top 30. Not sure.

Back in May I posted a compilation of my favorite stuff of 2011 up to that point. You can download it here and notice how I said that "most of these are likely to be included when time comes to sum up the best albums of the year"? That's not true, it turns out. Without going into detail I can tell you that not many of the bands included in that compilation will make it to the final top 25. Or top 30. Not sure. Which will be included and which ones get the shaft? Only time will tell.

That's a damn fine compilation of stuff though, and the fact that most of it won't make it onto the top 25 (or top 30, not sure) only goes to show how amazing this year in music has been. But then again, every year has loads of amazing releases if you just bother to look hard enough. To think there are those who complain that just isn't any good new music these days. Ignore such douchenozzles.

Here's some songs that do indeed get my juices flowing. Including one from Year of the Goat, whose Lucem Ferre is definitely one of the very finest releases of 2011. Though you won't see it on my top 25 (or top 30, not sure), as it's an EP and not an album.

In addition to that you also get more from the incredible Siena Root (a big favorite on this blog) and a song by Coca Carola which I must have listened to hundreds of time back in high school. Just couldn't get enough of that fucker.

Readers of this blog may have noticed I'm a fan of Marc Maron. I've followed his career ever since I first saw him as a guest on Late Night with Conan O'Brien 10+ years ago, and listen to his podcast WTF religiously. Pun intended, which brings us to the topic at hand.

The Jerusalem Syndrome: My Life As A Reluctant Messiah (which started as a one-man show in 2000 and became a book in 2001) follows Marc on a spiritual journey during which he basically tries to find the meaning of life. Only 194 pages and consistently entertaining, this is a quick and enjoyable read.

In fact, this one and Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club are the only books I've read front to back in one sitting.

Union Carbide Production was a hellraising group of young men from Gothenburg, Sweden who quickly became known as the roudiest bunch in town, both for the chaotic live shows, but also for their arrogant attitude.

Early U.C.P. may have sounded a lot like The Stooges, but these were no thugs, junkies and petty criminals from Ann Arbor. These were snotty upper class kids with money to burn, straight outta da fancy suburban neighbourhoods. They would talk in interviews about how much they loved playing tennis, wearing designer clothers, driving expensive cars their parents bought for them, and working on their tan by the pool. And how they only played rock 'n' roll because their decadent, privileged lives were boring.

Throughout the gigs, frontman Ebbot Lundberg would insult the audience, especially during shows in America where he would spend more time talking about how fat and disgusting everyone was than actually singing. Wherever they went they got on everybody's nerve, just as intended.

It's interesting how punk rock was supposed to be provocative and against the grain, but once you provoke the punks and the rockers themselves and go against their grain, they hate you for it. When they really should appreciate it for truly living up to the punk ethos. When punk and its aesthetics become generic and evolve into little more than rules you must follow in order to be punk, that's the moment the polar opposite becomes punk.

That's when you need spoiled rich kids telling crusty drunks with a mohawk living in a dumpster just how filthy and useless they are. Those who don't get that, don't know what punk was supposed to be in the first place. Those are people destined for a life in their very own kind of conformity, believing themselves to be rebels.

U.C.P. knew this however, and stopped playing raunchy Stooges rock the moment they realised that's what people expected them to do. Instead they mellowed out and adopted darker and more psychedelic influences on the 2nd album, and by the third one they were downright bluesy and Rolling Stones-y.

After recording their fourth album in Chicago with Steve Albini (during which time they got a fan letter from Kurt Cobain), U.C.P. called it quits in 1993. Several members, including Ebbot Lundberg, would go on to form The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

In 2003 I whipped up this little compilation of my favorite U.C.P. songs.

I got to say it was a good day.

All three great, though I'm saving anything more elaborate than that for my Best of 2011 list. I'll say this though: the DVD bonus material on Heritage pwns the shit out of the other two. It's an hour long, and while I have never seen Mikael Åkerfeldt look so bored and annoyed with being on camera, it was highly enjoyable. Seeing Alex Acuña work his voodoo magic was ace, and the two bonus tracks were fine additions.

Mastodon had excellent behind-the-scenes-making-of material for both Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye, and all we get here is five minutes? Lame stain. Nice to hear Brann talk about each individual track, but not a single word from any other band member? Not a word from the producer? Not a word from AJ Fosik, the woodworker who created the cover art? No video from the recording sessions? Fucking lame stain. There's an "alternate reality" featured which I have seen demonstrated on YouTube, but I can't get it to work.

Machine Head's was a bit better, with a 22 minute documentary about the recording of Unto the Locust. Nice, but still too brief. Makes you wonder why Machine Head and Mastodon even bothered to make bonus DVDs in the first place.

You like Coheed And Cambria? I do, though it saddens me that they are so painfully uneven.

For every amazing track there's at least two I could live without. So I did what I usually do - I took the best tracks and put them together to make one fucking excellent mix of awesomeness. And that means no songs from the first two albums, because they're both balls.

57 minutes of 45 seconds of some of the best progressive, lofty, high faluting, intergalactic sci-fi comic book rock you can imagine, topped with the most underrated vocals known to man. If I had a buck for every person who has said they'd be into this band if they only had a different singer I would have... uhm, lots of bucks.

Back when Metallica's Load and Reload came out I kept hearing people say two things. Number one: They're great if you just take them for what they are - heavy rock albums. Expecting thrash metal or even just metal will only set you up for disappointment.

Number two (tee hee): They're too uneven and everyone would've been much happier had they just gotten rid of the filler and put the best songs on one disc.

I always agreed with number one. I never agreed with number two, because I never tried it out myself. So I did. I took what I consider to be the best songs off of the two albums and stacked 'em all together and called the whole thing Unload. Because I'm clever like that. I now agree with number two as well.

Oh I'm sorry, what did you say? Your favorite Load/Reload songs are not on here? Wow, thanks for letting me know. I'll go give a shit right away.

The One Ring.net is essential for keeping up with the very latest news and updates regarding Peter Jackson's The Hobbit. That movie will own your ass and you will like it.

Invisible Oranges is most thourough, well-written and readable metal blog on teh innerwebs. Big words, but Invisible Oranges live up to them. Their on-going Metallica series alone is worth a mention. Which is why I mention it.

Here's a nice dude whose taste I don't always agree with, but he has a lot passion and enthusiasm for all things metal. It's in Swedish though. Read it through Google translator or something. I could say the same about kielbasage's blog, except his is in English.

The Living Doorway, shiney grey monotone, Stonerobixxx, Heavypsychmanblog, musictraveler always make me listen to good shit I hadn't even heard of.

I write for Star Maker Machine occasionally. Not as often as I used to though, but I'm working on it. Did one post on Silverbullit recently.

Punks Make Your Day is a fucking goldmine.

Punk Rock And Coffee chronicles the life of Gareth Smith, formerly of Raging Speedhorn, currently of Victims. Also husband of the guitarist of Misdemeanor who are featured on this week's mix.

The Hellacopters - "Cream of the Crap! Vol. 3" (2011)

We have established countless times on this blog that The Hellacopters were one of the finest, if not the finest rock 'n' roll band of all time. And by "we" I mean me.

They may have made the 11th best album of the 90s and the 3rd best album of the 00s, but their might goes deeper than that. I honestly and literally cannot think of one single song of theirs I don't like. I don't think I can say that about any other band.

During their fourteen year existence they released seven albums, countless EPs and singles and two compilations of songs off of those countless EPs and singles. These were called Cream of the Crap! and came in handy for those us who weren't too keen on spending hundreds of dollars on an old rare 7".

When the band split up in 2008 there were hints that a third volume of rarities was on the way. Well, it's almost three years to the day and it still hasn't arrived so I took upon myself to compile Cream of the Crap! Vol. 3, consisting of my favorite non-album tracks that weren't already included on volumes 1 and 2. And now I'm gonna share with all of you, because I'm awesome.

Avid readers of this blog will recognise some of these tracks as I've posted them before in various contexts. Don't worry, they're good enough to download twice.

Mostly covers on this one, but I always felt you tell the good bands from the bad ones from whose songs they choose to cover. When you can cover everyone from Venom and Motörhead to Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett and pull it off 100% you know you're dealing a group of dudes who know what the fuck they're doing.

The title of the latest Mastodon track Spectrelight made me think of the passage above, J.R.R. Tolkien's description of Minas Morgul in The Two Towers.

My conclusion? Mastodon should do the soundtrack to The Hobbit.

The song also confirms my opinions that Troy is god, and that Scott Kelly should do up-tempo music more often.
