Dolving leaves The Haunted

At least according to his Facebook:

"I am officially quitting The Haunted. After years of working with the band, I am out. I have had it. I will NOT answer questions to why. It's no one elses business. Thank you very much. I am looking forward to seeing you people at other shows with other projects."

Bring back Marco perhaps? Do At The Gates full time? Fuck if I know. Can't say I care much either way. I've been a fan of his, but over the years he's turned from eccentric with an attitude to full on asshole with an inflated sense of entitlment.

His plees on how he wants people to donate money for rent because he's too creative and too much of a genius to get a job really got on my tits. You have two kids to feed, you fucking bum. Man up and take some responsibility. I hope their mother has more sense than you, or those kids are truly fucked. Whatever.

What a useless post this has been. 34!

33 posts in one month!

A new record!

And at least four of them were worth reading!

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #149

Death. Fucking. Metal. With some Black. Fucking. Metal. in the middle for added flavor. And some fucking Slayer.

There are slight sound issues with the Zyklon track (some popping which most likely occured when the file was restored from my crashed harddrive), but hopefully it's not something that will ruin your listening experience too much.

I thought about just re-ripping the song, but I'm at least six feet away from the cd rack and sitting very comfortably.

(zip) MP3 Shuffle #149 (70 mb)

1. Lock Up - Tarturus (2011)

Books You Should Read: "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad

Speaking of music mixes that go well with books - two and a half years ago when I posted the Friday MP3 Shuffle #21 (right here) an anonymous reader left a comment saying it was just what he needed as he was currently making his/her way through Michael Azerrad's Our Band Could Be Your Life.

A mighty fine book, and #21 does go rather well with it, although Black Flag and Big Black are the only bands on it that actually feature in the book. So here it is again. Yeah. Uh huh. You betcha. Go nuts.

(zip) MP3 Shuffle #21 (42 mb)

Books You Should Read: "Everybody Loves Our Town" by Mark Yarm

Almost two years ago I called Greg Prato's Grunge Is Dead the best book I've read on the subject of the Seattle music scene of the 80s and 90s. I liked it so much I made a fucking insane compilation in honor of it. It's still one of the best compilations I've made, and I've made fucking hundreds.

But now it turns out Mark Yarm's Everybody Loves Our Town is superior. Also written in the always preferrable oral history format of letting the people involved tell the story themselves, this one goes deeper, has people Greg Prato didn't feature. Novoselic? Grohl? Vedder? All here. All biographies should, if possible, be written as an oral history.

So naturally I had to put together another compilation of my favorite music scene anywhere ever - the snotty rock 'n' roll written and performed in the upper left corner of the United States between circa 1980 and 1995. Could this somehow magically be even better than the first one? You be the judge.

Watch the great documentary Hype! while you're at it.

Songs That Get My Juices Flowing #176

Starting tomorrow there will be a Theme Week on Metal Bastard!

Every day next week will feature a particular band that I grew up listening to and which had an enormous impact on my interest in music ever since. If you want a hint, they were a part of my Top 30 Album of the 90s list.

Some of you will dig it, others won't give a shit.

When I say "every day", I mean every day except Tuesday and Friday. On Tuesday you'll get Trippy Shit Tuesday as usual (as well as a likkle supm spum because it's Valentine's Day) and the weekly MP3 Shuffle will appear on Friday.

So not a full week, but five days. Yeah.

(mp3) Behold! The Monolith - Land of the midnight sun
Available on EP (2008)

(mp3) Death Strike - The truth
Available on Fuckin' Death (1991)

(mp3) Nightbringer - To will
Available on V/A - On the Powers of the Sphinx (2010)

(mp3) Tank 86 - Tank
Available on Ariba (2005)

(mp3) The Empire Shall Fall - These colors bleed
Available on Awaken (2009)

And lastly something that has nothing to do with anything.

I may not be Star Wars nerd, but I dig that shit. I dig it. Not the prequels, fuck that shit. But the original trilogy, I dig that shit. I dig it. I used to collect those toys back in the 80s. I dug that shit.

This may be old news as it was originally posted on YouTube in segments, but now it's on Vimeo in its full length glory.

Some dude took the original trilogy and replaced scenes with outtakes, bloopers, deleted scenes, B-roll footage, behind the scenes stuff, alternate audio etc, added preproduction stuff like conceptual art and animatics, inserted audio of the cast and crew talking about the film. I dig that shit.

It sounds really choppy and terrible the way I'm describing it, but it's masterfully edited, it flows beautifully. It's like watching the movies and a making-of documentary at the same time. Dude should get some kind of award.

Just look at this shit. And dig it.

How fucking tits is that? Rhetorical question, don't answer it. Though if you had to answer it the answer would be "Incredibly tits". Now take a look at The Empire Strikes Back:

wtf how tits is that? So tits. What about The Return of the Jedi?

omfg so tits. The same dude did the same to Raiders of the Lost Ark, check these tits:

omd did u see those tits?

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #147

There's four things I can say about this week's Friday mix:

1. It's fucking incredible. Unless you can get three greased up midgets in afro wigs to do a jig around you while you masturbate with one hand and punch baby seals in the face with the other, you won't find a more satisfactory way to kill 45 minutes.

2. I've been trying to squeeze the tracks by Roswell and Bodies In The Gears Of The Apparatus into a mix for ages, and I finally pulled it off.

3. Misery Loves Co were so fucking underrated.

4. There's a good chance Memfis deserved to be on my list of the top 20 albums of 2011.

(zip) MP3 Shuffle #147 (68 mb)

1. Acephalix - Immanent (2010)
2. Kayser - Noble is your blood (2005)
3. Mistress - Talking to god (on a microphone made of steel) (2005)
4. Roswell - Salvation (2003)
5. Harm's Way - Isolation (2011)
6. Napalm Death - Work to rule (2009)
7. Fear Factory - Messiah (1998)
8. Misery Loves Co. - Strain of frustration (1995)
9. Memfis - Enigma (2011)
10. Cobalt - Arsonry (2009)
11. Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus - Fuck her like you paid for it (2004)
12. Kongh - Thunders collide (2010)

Pay for your music. You cheap bastard.

Songs That Get My Juices Flowing #174 + a couple of more things about Rapidshare

Thanks for your input on my switch from Mediafire to Rapidshare, much appreciated. You can still make your voice heard on the matter - this is as new for me as it (perhaps) is for you - so let me know of any problems that may arise.

One such problem is apparently Rapidshare's download limit. If you download "too much" (whatever that is) you're put on a time limit and can't download anything for a while. Either that or you have to close your browser, delete some cookies, and then come back.

This could make things rather cumbersome if you're not familiar with the songs/bands in question and feel the need to download them all to see if you like them or not. I'd love to have a player like on Star Maker Machine (where I also contribute, albeit not very often), but for that you need direct download links to your mp3 files, which I don't have.

I never had it on Mediafire, and I don't have it on Rapidshare - when files are uploaded onto a free account (which is what I have) you need to go to the hosting site and download it from there.

To make a long and dull story mercifully shorter: any tracks I post will pop up on my Hype Machine page. There you can stream the tracks, see if you dig them or not, and then only download the ones you actually want. There's also a Hype Machine page for Metal Bastard Goes Soft. You can find that here and it operates much in the same way.

Okay?

Now, you may wonder why on earth someone would post a Primal Scream track on a metal blog. Well, you won't wonder that after you've heard it. That's some rough shit right there.

Great stuff. As is the Warrant song. Like a lot of people I only knew them as "the Cherry Pie band", but damn they had some great songs, and Jani Lane had some sweet pipes.

(mp3) Primal Scream - Accelerator
Available on XTRMNTR (2000)

(mp3) Dead Meadow - Everything's goin' on
Available on Howls From the Hills (2001)

Torture Division - "Satan, Sprit & Våld" (2012)

Few supergroups are more fun than death metal supergroups. Terrorizer, Bloodbath, Death Breath, Lock Up and God Among Insects instantly come to mind, but there are countless others.

Then there's Torture Division, featuring Lord K Philipson (The Project Hate, God Among Insects, Dark Funeral, House of Usher etc), Jörgen Sandström (Grave, Entombed, Vicious Art etc) and Tobben Gustafsson (Vomitory, The Project Hate). An admirable bunch who, apart having spent the last five years producing some of the best death metal the world has to offer, tell all record labels to kindly gtfo and give away their recordings for free instead.

There's the option to donate a few bucks if you so wish, which I (sort of) did last year by buying a t-shirt. A black t-shirt with dark grey lettering which makes it almost impossible to read, but at least the fabric itself feels like quality. High thread count or something, I dunno. It's comfy, and I know it's a muddafugging Torture Division shirt I'm wearing, and that's what matters.

With the latest offering Satan, Sprit & Våld (=Satan, Booze & Violence), they've left English behind to fully embrace their native tongue of Swedish, something they've dabbled with once or twice in the past. Actually, it's not just Swedish - it's fucking gotländska. I bow to thee, Herr Sandström.

Absolutely crushing stuff, as always. Old school and new school in morbid harmony. Few bands can sound like 1992 and 2012 and every year inbetween and pull it off with such elegance.

(mp3) Torture Division - Otukt

Trippy Shit Tuesday

There used to be a trippy pop band called Detritus Shrine. What happened to them? I recall shooting the shit with their singer Sondra in GeoCities' Area 51 chat room in 1997 or 1998. I also seem to recall her telling me she was pregnant at the time and that her boyfriend used to complain about her slow driving.

How come that's the kind of stuff I can remember without a glitch? I need to stars using my brain powarz for more relevant things.

A quick googling for "detritus shrine" gives me only one hit, a website with the title "Electric torture hentai". I'm too scared to click it, but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with the band anyway.

So this mix is named after Detritus Shrine, wherever they are nowadays. They sounded like this by the way.

(zip) Trippin' Balls Vol. 25 - Detritus shrine (92 mb)

1. Rites - Intro (2011)

Songs That Get My Juices Flowing #173

XI by Hexis is my favorite release of 2012 so far.

Though that might change in a minute when I put on the new Napalm Death for the first time. 2012 - another fucking flawless year in music.

By the way, yesterday when I asked if anyone was having issues with Rapidshare, one of you wrote this:
"after about the third download, Rapidshare wants you to buy the pro account for multiple downloads.
So I close my browser, erase my history and come back to the blog. Then I download the rest with RS thinking it's a new session."

Anybody else have to go through the same procedure?

In other news: I'm loving the second season of Portlandia so farting much that I'm considering giving the unbelievably uneven first season another chance. I will also never be able to take Sleater-Kinney seriously again.

PS. I just realised the Hexis album was released in 2011. Fuck.

Available on XI (2012)

Paradise Lost: Can we have a bunch of jumbled beige shit just kind of strewn across the whole thing, like John Baizley but with less purpose?

Valnoir: Sure. With or without your logo pasted ill fittingly on top of it?
