Songs Get Juices Flowing My That #142

True story: Today I saw Alex Hellid of Entombed in my local grocery store. The annoying thing is I came reeeaaally close to putting on my Uprising tee when I left the house this morning. I could've blown his mind.

Lesson learned: Never leave home without your Uprising tee on.

Trippy Shit Tuesday

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant tide
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine
And no one showed us to the land
And no one knows the where's or why's
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #129

This is unlikely to get very many downloads. A crying shame, because it's amazing.

37 minutes of noisy, angular, and occasionally rather grating hijinx, with a couple of more straight forward tracks by Spazm 151 and Tight Bros to give you the strength to keep listening.

Hats off to Kielbasage for introducing me to the Guadalupe Plata song. Quality stuff.

Trippy Shit Tuesday

I'm glad so many of you recognised the awesomeness and badassery of last week's edition of Trippin' Balls. The download stats were just as great as I had anticipated. Good for you.

This week's edition is at 53 minutes the shortest one yet, but just as sweet as the others. Not much else I can say about it, except that the world can always use a bit more Harry Partch.

Curly burl is curly

Let's nerd out.

Mastodon has released the separate tracks for Curl of the Burl, allowing fans to remix and add whatever they want. I don't know how to remix or add anything - if I did, I can assure you I'd spend my time making music instead of just writing about it.

So here's the drums, guitars, bass and vocals, all on separate tracks. Nerdy, and fucking fun. Brann sounds amazing - how many bands can you think of were the drummer is the best singer? Skinny boy got some pipes.

PS. I've had posts taken down for their Mastodon contents, so if anyone from Warner reads this: Up yours, you can't take this post down. You released these tracks yourselves! Bwaahahaha! I am above the law!

The wit and the wisdom

Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü, Sugar and solo fame, is a bit of a personal hero of mine. You crazy kids probably know him best as the dude singing on Foo Fighters' Dear Rosemary.

Found this great interview where he talks about his book See A Little Light, about being one of the founding fathers of alternative rock, about being gay in the punk community, and much else.

Listen to this, then go buy some fucking Hüsker Dü records.

Who's the retard here, me or Relapse.com?

Trying to order two t-shirts from Relapse. Sounds simple enough, but after logging in and entering all of my details, I just keep getting this shit (click to enlarge):

What am I doing wrong?

I also get told that "your order can not be completed at this time as there is no shipping methods available for it. Please make neccessary changes in your shipping address."

What's wrong with my shipping address? They don't ship to Sweden? Is that it? Then why the fuck does the registration form have a menu bar with a million fucking countries to choose from including (you guessed it) SWEDEN?

Fuck this assload of ass.

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #128

I'm gonna sound like an ungrateful dick saying this, but I'll say it anyway: Stop sending me your shitty promos.

Every day I get sent loads of stuff. People telling me to listen to this, to listen to that, watch this video, review that live clip. Sounds great, doesn't it? To have your inbox fill up with free music from all over the world.

Too bad 99.9% of it is ass.

Rarely do you get anything interesting or even good, and almost never do you get something that's actually great. One of the few times it's happened was when a band called god bows to math (I'm told it's supposed to be all lower-case letters) sent me a recording. I enjoyed it so much I even included a track from it on next week's Friday mix.

There's also been stuff like Dirt Communion, Turbowolf and a couple of others, but these are the exceptions. Lonely golden nuggets in a two-thousand gallon pool of puke. The last few months I haven't even opened any promo emails - straight to the junk mail folder they go.

If this blog has proven anything it's that I know how to dig out quality music, regardless of how obscure it may be. Trust me on this: if your music is good enough, I'll find it myself sooner or later. If it isn't I'll continue to ignore it forever. Either way, quit clogging up my mail box.

Stop sending me your shitty promos.

Books You Should Read: "The Rasputin File" by Edvard Radzinsky

I don't recommend enough books on this blog. I can only remember doing it once - last year when I told you to buy Grunge Is Dead by Greg Prato.

Well, now I'm telling you to read this most excellent book about Rasputin. These guys put it well:
"This book is based on a lost investigation file that only resurfaced after the fall of the Communist Russian government, in 1995. It was at this point that the world was to learn of just how involved Grigory Rasputin was at being a catalyst to the Russian revolution, which led to the ending of the Tsars in Russian history. The file is filled with interrogations of many of the people that made up the intimate circles of Rasputin, himself. And it is through these interrogations that a clearer picture of the character of Rasputin evolves."

If you have even the slightest interest in the life and death of Rasputin (if you're awesome you do), this is essential reading. Perhaps whilst listening to Mastodon's Crack the Skye?

Or this one:

Purified from the flames of the waking dream
Negates requisite embodiment from life to life
Currents ground as the solistic eye prevails

V/A - "I Närbild: Svensk Retrorock" (2011)

Back in April Close-Up Magazine had a feature on Sweden's ever-growing 60s/70s retro rock scene, written by this guy. For subscribers such as myself, an excellent compilation CD was included with selected songs by the bands featured. That's the compilation you're getting today.

If you've followed this blog for a while you may recognise some of these names. My personal favorite on here is probably Gracious Man by Spiders. Cracking tune.

Trippy Shit Tuesday

Ah yes, you like Trippy Shit Tuesday, don't you? I can tell by the number of downloads. It may tickle your loins then to learn that I finished Vol. 10 just a few minutes ago, so this feature isn't going anywhere any time soon. Mark your calenders - your mind blown, every Tuesday.

You benefit from my awesomeness once again. You're welcome.

Back in April I said that if more people listened to Crippled Black Phoenix, the world would be a better place. That still holds true, and if their rendition of Journey's Of a Lifetime isn't yet another proof of this fact then you're simply not paying attention.
