The Friday MP3 Shuffle #112

My genius is beginning to hurt. Especially when I make a fucking excellent mix like this and then have to wait a whole month before I can share with you.

Yes, these mixes are often made long in advance and I've been sitting on this one since March 30th. Agonizing. I just finished #115 the other day and the thought of having to wait three weeks to post it is killing me. Because it's that good. You just wait and see.

And don't even get me started on #114, large parts of which could be a sort-of sequal to my flawless Paficic North West compilation of last year.

But enough of that, let's focus on this one. I've tried drinking in the sun on three separate occasions with this mix on full volume and it works spectalularly well. How lovely when spring is in the air, spirits are high and alcohol is going down your throat.

Good times. I call this mix "The Mood-Raiser".

V/A - "Gummo Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (1997)

Here you go, the classic soundtrack to Harmony Korine's classic directorial debut Gummo.

The soundtrack matches the film perfectly, in that the film was amazing, confusing, hilarious, depressing, horrible, annoying and occasionally unwatchable, and the soundtrack is amazing, confusing, hilarious, depressing, horrible, annoying and occasionally unlistenable.

White trash cubed.

(zip) V/A - Gummo Soundtrack (69 mb)

1. Cockadoodledoo
2. Absu - The gold torques of Uliad
3. Eyehategod - Serving time in the middle of nowhere
4. Electric Hellfire Club - DWSOB
5. Spazz - Gummo love theme
6. Bethlehem - Schuld uns'res knöchrigen faltpferd
7. Burzum - Rundgang um die transzendentale säule der singularität
8. Bathory - Equimanthorn
9. Dark Noerd - Smokin' husks
10. Sleep - Dragonaut
11. Brujeria - Matanda gueros '97
12. Namanax - The medicined man
13. Nifelheim - Hellish blasphemy
14. Mortician - Skin peeler
15. Mystifier - Give the human devil his due
16. Destroy All Monsters - Mom's and dad's pussy
17. Bethlehem - Verschleierte irreligiositat
18. Mischa Maisky - Suite no. 2 for cello in D minor
19. Sleep - Some grass
20. Rose Shepard & Ellen M. Smith - Jesus loves me

It wouldn't be right of me to post this glorious/shitty (take your pick) soundtrack and not also share these brilliant videos of Harmony Korine himself. Three interviews done on the David Letterman show in 1995 and 1997 that flawlessly capture the essence of Harmony Korine.

I particularly love the sudden change in him between the second and the third interview, which were taped only months apart. In no time at all he went from being a young well-dressed awkward eccentric to full-blown pill popping couldn't-give-a-shit hipster bum. It may have been some kind of Andy Kaufman-ish act, or he may have actually turned into walking "Don't Do Drugs" ad.

Either way, I couldn't love him more. A true genius in his very own peculiar little way.

This is television history, so do yourself a favor and take the time to watch these, and you'll appreciate the soundtrack so much more. Besides, it's not like you don't have 20 minutes to spare right now. What else do you have going on in your life that's so important?

Watch and kneel at the altar of Harmony Korine:

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #111

The perks of living in a godless country like Sweden are plentiful. One of them is that one of the biggest television networks chooses to air Life of Brian on Good Friday. Fucking brilliant.

Not to be outdone, here's an appropriately profane Friday mix to honor the death of someone who never existed in the first place, except for in the minds of far too many people.

Question to ponder while listening to Metal Bastard's MP3 Shuffle #111 and relishing the absence of a divine creator: Is Maim's Deceased To Exist the best reverb-laden old school death metal album since Repugnant's 2006 meisterwerk Epitome of Darkness?

The answer is quite likely "hell yes".

(zip) MP3 Shuffle #111 (66,6 mb)

So... the new Morbid Angel song then

Will 2011 be remember as the year of "controversial" metal albums?

First The Haunted annoyed beer-guzzling neanderthals everywhere, then there's the upcoming In Flames album which I'm told sounds like Depeche Mode, the new Opeth album which reportedly sounds very little like Opeth, and Illud Divinum Insanus, the first Morbid Angel album in eight years.

Reports have kept coming in mentioning everything from "robot riffing" to Dutch techno. If it's all true, it could be the St. Anger or Cold Lake of the decade. Awesome, my fingers are crossed.

ExistoVulgore sounds pretty conventional though. Not bad - Dave Vincent's vocals are great and the bee swarm riff @ 2:01 makes me wet. But I'd rather hear the weird shit.

I'm glad so many of you liked the Marc Maron interview with Zach Galifianakis I posted a few weeks ago. I liked it too. We're kindred spirits. We should kiss gently with tongues and get married.

Here's more Zach doing what he does best - interacting with people who don't necessarily care too much about him or his show.

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #110

So, after a spectacularly uncreative week, which consisted mainly of one repost after another (and then yet another), here we are again with some original material.

The first and last tracks on this week's Friday mix are taken from the recent Mammoth Grinder/Hatred Surge split 12" on Cyclopean Records. It's one of the best releases of the year so far. Here's where you buy it.

And everything between the first and last track is fucking amazing too, but that can hardly come as a surprise to you, beloved reader.

By the way, thanks for recognising the genius of last week's mix, which got about three times as many downloads as most Friday mixes. Good for you.

2. Incubus - Curse of the damned cities (1990)

Bloodbath DVD preview

I am officially fapping like a little monkey.

Queens of the Stone Age galore again again (re-post)

Originally posted here on August 17th 2009.

As promised, the third and last Queens Of The Stone Age rarities collections. Click the "Desert Rock" at the bottom of the post to find the other two.

This one has some of my favorites, like the Brian Eno cover Needle In The Camel's Eye (which elegantly slides into The Velvet Underground's I'm Waiting For My Man), the 2005 version of Infinity (which doesn't beat the 2000 version, but is still very good), the ZZ Top cover Precious And Grace and the excellent live version of A Song For The Dead.

There's also a third version of the fan favorite Born To Hula, and this is probably the best one.

Queens of the Stone Age galore again (re-post)

Originally posted here on July 24th 2009.

Without further ado, here's another 19 tracks of non-album material, the QOTSA Oddities Collection Volume 2.

Volume 2 includes QOTSA's perhaps best song, Infinity, recorded for the Heavy Metal 2000 soundtrack. It was re-recorded during the Lullabies To Paralyze sessions in 2004. That version, which is not as good as this one, will be included in Volume 3.

Queens of the Stone Age galore (re-post)

Originally posted here on June 9th 2009.

The P.J. Harvey & Desert Sessions post yesterday got me nuts for all things Josh Homme, so I threw together a nice, fat mix of some Queens Of The Stone age odds and sods. Far from complete of course, QOTSA records more than should be humanly possible, but these are some of my personal favorites.

Some covers, b-sides, acoustic versions of album tracks etc ranging from 1998 to 2008. I made a QOTSA rarities post from their Era Vulgaris album last year, so I chose not to include them and make room other songs instead. Except Christian Brothers, it's just too good to leave out.

The most shining gold nugget here is the douchebag in the audience who, after hearing a blistering version of The Doors' Not To Touch The Earth, expresses disbelief about the band playing a cover and moans about it. I guess some people are just never satisfied.

Good shit.

Holy shit, the new Whitesnake album is fucking awesome!

It's called Forevermore, it's totally awesome, and it looks like this:

They rock out like it's still 1988, Easier Said Than Done recalls the power balladry of old, and David Coverdale still sounds like a golden god. The best heavy metal singer in the world since Dio packed it in.

Unashamed cock rock of the highest order. I'm told the deluxe version comes with a mullet and a codpiece. I'll be thrusting my groin in four different ways to this shit tonight.

Here's old goody to listen to while you place an order for Forevermore:
