Back when Metallica's Load and Reload came out I kept hearing people say two things. Number one: They're great if you just take them for what they are - heavy rock albums. Expecting thrash metal or even just metal will only set you up for disappointment.
Number two (tee hee): They're too uneven and everyone would've been much happier had they just gotten rid of the filler and put the best songs on one disc.
I always agreed with number one. I never agreed with number two, because I never tried it out myself. So I did. I took what I consider to be the best songs off of the two albums and stacked 'em all together and called the whole thing Unload. Because I'm clever like that. I now agree with number two as well.
Oh I'm sorry, what did you say? Your favorite Load/Reload songs are not on here? Wow, thanks for letting me know. I'll go give a shit right away.

I love both albums, and I also think "Load" is one of Metallica's bests. But now I keep hearing people say they're crap. That's just too damn predictable.
By the way, great selection, I love "Cure" and "The Outlaw Torn", but where the hell is "Thorn Within", papi chulo?
I've been a Metallica fan since around early 1990. I was so into them in high school and I certainly celebrate their first four albums as much as the next spazz fan (in fact I'm wearing an old Ride The Lightning shirt as I type this; truth) but I must say that Devil's Dance is one of my catalog Favorites. Top 10 of the whole enchilada. So there are some real gems here. So piss off naysayers
My wife always says "no one would have complained if they just changed their name for these albums." And she's right. Load/Reload seemed like polished swamp rock to me. And I think we're seeing the same reaction over Heritage.
St. Anger still makes me sad to think about.
F'ing cool. Thanks for this article.
I've also always thought one good album in there somewhere.
Is that Outloud Torn unemcumbered? If not why not?
