I can only comment based on hearing "The Devil's Orchard".

Where else were they supposed to go, really? At some point it was entirely predictable that they'd run out of space if they kept the death/growl/evil vocal aesthetic.

There isn't a long shelf life for *greatness* in any genre, and half so much in metal, and so I can hardly blame them for not knowing what to do once they fulfilled that. They got there with Ghost Reveries. I had high hopes for Watershed but came away very cold from it. So nothing surprising here.

As a fan ya just gotta know when to let go and say, "they had a good run." There's no point in doing a side project when the main event has run its creative course and is obviously needing a fresh injection of ideas -- the only problem being that MA & co. have used 'em all, after putting the kitchen sink in their songs for so long.

So the death/growls had to go. Open up the sound, lets the airy-fairy in (70's Pink Floyd indeed!), and brings Opeth into the adult music scene. Game over, death final. It was bound to happen, friends. This is, always has been, and ever will be a game for the young. Vibrant and living metal greatness is extremely fleeting, so enjoy it when it's in front of you destroying your face, tomorrow it may be shining its shoes for a Presidential lunch or a ribbon-cutting at the new Porche factory. So it goes.
