The Friday MP3 Shuffle #120

The Friday mixes are usually pretty streamlined and fit into a certain mold.

There's the death metal/black metal/grindcore mold, the sludge/stoner/doom mold, the rock mold, the punk mold, the oldies mold, the post rock mold, the noise mold, the heavy metal mold, etc, because I like to maintain a certain vibe throughout the mix and not have it go in a dozen different directions. For the most part I try to keep certain genres apart - some just gel better than others. As much as I love both Queens of the Stone Age and Mayhem, having them in the same mix doesn't sound right to my ears.

After thirty or forty Friday mixes I started to get the hang of this, which is why the early ones don't always hold together very well as a whole, even though each individual track might be good. Which each mix I've becoming increasingly obsessed with making sure it works as a whole. This means that more and more frequently have I removed tracks I adore because they didn't fit in the big picture, and put them on the hold until I some day make a mix where they do fit.

This is hardly something you as a reader and listener would really care about or even notice as you listen, but like I said: achieving perfection with these mixes has become an obsession. It's the indulgences of a music nerd and I take that seriously, though at least I'm aware of his silly and pointless it is. They're just digital mix tapes and ultimately they don't matter, but fuck it, I still need them to be as good as they can be.

Though this week's mix is the reason the rant began, as this one is kind of all over the place, adhering to no mold in particular. Quite old school for me - this is the kind of mix I could've posted 18 months ago. Or maybe it's just me - it's very possible that it's not a scattered as I think it is. Either way, it fucking rips.
