The Friday MP3 Shuffle #64

Thanks for the responses to this post. I am currently looking into some of your suggestions, as a couple of them were quite interesting. MarkFromReno suggested a Cathedral retrospective. A great idea, I'm considering it like a motherfucker.

Someone anonymous wanted a post on Australian music. Unfortunately my knowledge of the Aussie scene begins and ends with AC/DC, Powder Monkeys, The Datsuns, Wolfmother and Portal. It would be an awfully short post.

G From D (I know "D" stands for "Denver", and I've decided "G" stands for "Gregorius" because it makes me happy) requested a "play" button for the mp3 links for previewing the songs before download. That's not gonna happen for a variety of reasons, but you can listen to the mp3s I post right here, on the Hype Machine.

And I'm terribly sorry, Kielbasage, but no Ricky Gervais and less black metal?

Keep dreaming, dude. ;)

Any requests, dear readers?

Seeing how stingy most of you are with comments, I'm not sure this will get many responses, but it's worth a try:

As a reader, is there anything you'd like see done differently on this blog? What are you pleased with? What are you not pleased with? Likes and dislikes, and all that jazz.

Anything you'd like to see more of around here? Something you'd like to see less of?

Let's hear it.

PS. Satan bless the handful of you who do leave comments on a regular basis. You know who you are.

Ricky Gervais + J.R.R. Tolkien

A snippet of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (and to a lesser extent Karl Pilkington) talking about the premier of The Return Of The King from XFM 104.9's The Ricky Gervais Show, as aired on December 13th 2003.

Which soon turns into a discussion on Shakespeare and linguistics.

The Friday MP3 Shuffle #63

Well well well it appears summer has finally arrived once and for all in the arctic wasteland known as Sweden.

It's 25 degrees centigrade and I'm fucking melting here. How can some people put up with sort of weather, or hotter, all year around?

Transport League - "Satanic Panic" (2000)

When I blogged about Transport League's second album Superevil the other day I mentioned this one, their third.

In that post I said that Satanic Panic was almost as good as Superevil, and I would now like to retract that statement. The two are in fact equal in quality.

So if you missed the Superevil post you can read it here for band info and such, and then enjoy these sweet tunes:

Transport League - "Superevil" (1998)

B-Thong was the subject of my very first post on this blog, so I won't get into it all again. In mid 1990s singer Tony Jelencovich started Transport League as a sideproject, a band which exhibited a much looser, groovier sound than B-Thong's quite rigid metal.

Ironically, after Jelencovich left to focus on Transport League fulltime, B-Thong adopted much of Transport League's rockier sound for their 1997 album From Strength To Strength. Which by the way had Ralf Gyllenhammer from Mustasch on vocals, a band I wrote about last week.

Check in on Friday for this week's mp3 Shuffle for a sample of the Gyllenhammer-led B-Thong.

Transport League's first album Stallion Showcase came out in 1995 is a very uneven affair. The follow-up Superevil came out three years later and was an improvement in every department.

Rocking, swinging metal to shake your ass and drink beer to. There's bits of White Zombie in there, plenty of Corrosion Of Conformity, some Load-era Metallica, perhaps a pinch or two of Kyuss, and healthy dose of Entombed's trademark death 'n' roll. A band like Chicago's Soil ripped off Transport League's sound completely and saw some success with it. While Transport League remained ignored and unknown.

The third album Satanic Panic came out in 2000 and is almost as good as this one. Then things started going downhill.

While incorrectly being labelled as "nu metal" by some at the time, Transport League did eventually go down that abysmal road with 2003's Multiple Organ Harvest, which sounded more like Spineshank and Static-X than their former selves. Watch this and weep.

Oh how the great have fallen.

I'm running around like a *beep* here sorting *beep* out for you, alright?

In this installment of "What Ricky Gervais/Stephen Merchant/Karl Pilkington stuff has David been listening to today?" we're reached the frightening state of mind of the über-grumpy Karl.

Karl is always grumpy, mainly because Ricky keeps winding him up (usually by squeezing his head), but occasionally Ricky winds him up so much that the laddish street thug that lives inside every Mancunian wakes up and Karl and becomes über-grumpy.

It's not pretty. Honestly - Karl Pilkington can be a regular Liam Gallagher if you annoy him enough.

Both of these are from the third series of The Ricky Gervais Show which aired on London's XFM 104.9 from November 1st 2003 to January 17th 2004.

Mustasch galore

My relationship with Gothenburg's hard rock heroes Mustasch is a bit torn, as they probably one of the most uneven bands around. One moment they're excellent, the next snooze-inducing. Frontman Ralf Gyllenhammar's penchant for clowning around in every silly TV show imaginable also makes it hard to appreciate his music sometimes.

So what I decided to do was trim all the fat off and compile all their best songs from all of their releases so far - the full-lengths Above All (2002), RatSafari (2003), Powerhouse (2005), The Latest Version Of The Truth (2007) and S/t (2009), and their two EPs The True Sound Of The New West (2001) and Parasite! (2006).

With all the golden nuggest compiled like this, it makes you think how unfair it is that Mustasch isn't much bigger than they are. When they apply themselves and try a little harder, they're bloody brilliant. They may be stars in Sweden, but internationally no one seems to care. And it will probably stay that way until they learn how to kill their darlings and leave the lame tracks off their releases.

Bummer.

Little fellas in wheelchairs and that

I hope you don't mind all of this Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington stuff, because it's gonna keep coming. Oh yes it is. No wonder, as I've been listening to this more than music lately. I can't escape it, it's becoming a part of my very DNA.

These are from the 2nd series of The Ricky Gervais Show on XFM, which aired for two hours every Saturday from August 24th 2002 to August 16th 2003. Here we have Karl's segment Educating Ricky, which involved him trying to teach Ricky things. It seldom worked.

Also a bit about the Paralympics and the point of showing "little fellas in wheelchairs" playing tennis on TV.

The Jamaican fella might've screamed this on the Titanic

More Gervais/Merchant/Pilkington highlights from XFM's The Ricky Gervais Show.

Here we get to experience Karl's greatest contribution to mankind: Rockbusters, which involves Karl giving out "cryptic" clues and the initials of a band or an artist and listeners emailing in the answers. A gameshow that made sense only to him.

Also, more ridiculous monkey news.

partypartypartypartypartypartypartyparty

Few people put me in a better mood than Andrew WK, the Andy Kaufman of the 21st century.

His excellent third album Close Calls With Brick Walls has finally been released outside Asia after four years of legal trouble. It comes with a bonus disc of an additional 70 minutes of brand new music.

Sadly, this bonus disc is nowhere near as good as the original album. On the original disc Andrew WK shed his rocker skin and emerged as his generation's Elton John. Big words, but they're true. The three tracks below are taken from this rather lacklustre bonus disc.

But by all means go and buy the record for the first disc alone. Excellent it be.

If songs like I Came For You, The Rubber Room, One Brother, You Will Remember Tonight and fantastic Hand On The Place don't convince you of Andrew WK's genius I can do nothing but pity you.

Varg Vikernes covers himself

And by "covers himself" I don't mean he's playing ghost with a sheet over his head. Although I'm sure he loves doing that every now and then, because who doesn't?

No, I mean that his latest album Belus (which I like more with each listen) has a track entitled Belus' Død, a black metalized version of the song Dauði Baldrs, off the album of the same name. Which of course is one of the two rubbish electronic ambient albums Vikernes made in prison while serving time for the murder of Euronymous.

Either I'm really slow or half-deaf, because it took me a good twenty listens before I even realised it was the same song.

Perhaps I can be excused though, as Dauði Baldrs is so fucking terrible it's hard to maintain focus while listening to it, with the least convincing computerized strings I've ever heard and some sort of farting sounds which I can only assume are meant to be saxophones. I'm not sure though.
