Clawfinger - "Deaf Dumb Blind" (1994)

I've always stated that I have no guilty pleasures. I like what I like and do so without shame.

Clawfinger would be the exception.

They occasionally stumbled over a decent riff seemingly by accident, but on the whole they had little to offer. The songwriting is clunky and the lyrics almost unbelievably bad. With singer Zak Tell growing up in the England, you'd think he'd have a better grasp of the language than your average third grader. He's also possibly the worst rapper in rap metal, which says a lot.

Even the name of the band is fucking stupid.

On later albums Clawfinger have cleaned up their act a bit. While the lyrics are still often cringeworthy, the songs overall are better, the production is thick and punchy. Yes, you could almost say Clawfinger have sounded good on the last two or three albums.

But for some reason I don't care for them much, whereas I cannot stop listening to this their debut album and the 1995 follow-up Use Your Brain. Why do I only dig the bad Clawfinger? What is hidden in the embarrassing display of crap that is their first two albums that I cannot resist? Do I need them to suck to feel better about myself?

I have no idea.

Ah!
