Mastodon & Billy Gibbs cover ZZ Top

As reported on Blabbercock, Mastodon team up with Billy Gibbons for a cover of ZZ Top's Just Got Paid from their second album, 1972's Rio Grande Mud, for the covers compilation Covered, A Revolution In Sound: Warner Bros. Records, released two days ago.

The rest of this compilation looks like total ass - Michelle Branch covering Joni Mitchell, Disturbed covering Faith No More, Adam Sandler covering Neil Young etc. I could go on but I might get a stroke.

I'll just download the Mastodon track, which no doubt will be 100% tits, and pretend the rest never happened.

(mp3) Mastodon - Burning man
Available on Remission (2002)

Sepultura - Under A Pale Grey Sky (live, 2002)

Taped at Brixton Academy on December 16th 1996, the very last show Max Cavalera ever did with Sepultura. A great monument of the end of a glorious era. Never again will Sepultura have such inspiring inbetween song banter.

GREETINGS FROM THE TURD WORLD!!!

BIN IF THE REMAINS!!!

MASS HIPPIE NOSES!!!
(mp3) Sepultura - Roots bloody roots
(mp3) Sepultura - Arise/Dead embryonic cells (highly recommended!)

God save the new knug

Welcome, Danny Boy.

Just when Sweden's most famous and redundant family was starting to scrape the bottom of the gene pool, you strode in on your mighty steed (exercise bike) and saved Lady I-Buy-Botox-With-Tax-Money McGee and her husband Lord Swedish-Equivalent-Of-George-W-Bush from having grandchildren with webbed feet.

Anyone that annoys Our Royal Highnesses is worthy of my admiration.

I love you, Daniel. You fucking rawk. Thanks for everything you do.

Available on We're Only In It For The Drugs (1979)

Mastodon's Crack The Skye has leaked and it's right fucking HERE!!!

The new Mastodon album, sans the 13 minute final track The Last Baron, leaked today. Still, six out of seven tracks is pretty damn good. I'm especially impressed with Troy's vocals, just listen to Oblivion, the first track. I had no idea the man had such pipes.

Oh my god this album pwns so hard... oh so hard. Mastodon solidifies their position as one of the best bands in the known universe.

All in all, it's trippier than ever just as promised. This is Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd all rolled into one, filtered through the fucked up metal minds of Mastodon.

This is the best album of 2009. I told you so months ago, nigga. I told you so months ago.

I had some technical troubles uploading these mp3s, FileDen kept cutting me off so the whole files didn't seem to get uploaded. I'm not sure if the full songs are there but if they're not, just download the full zip which is hosted on a separate and more reliable Snapdrive account.

UPDATE FEB. 21: Yep, it's as I feared, FileDen keeps fucking with me. I've received several comments and emails about the individual mp3 files not working, but I've tried the zip file and it works. So go with that one, it's at the bottom.
1. Oblivion
2. Divinations
3. Quintessence
4. The czar
5. Ghost of Karelia
6. Crack the skye
7. The last baron (not yet leaked)

(zip) Crack The Skye (lo res rip)

Your weekend is hereby saved. You're welcome.

I let the trusty old mp3 player (Creative Zen ftw!) choose my soundtrack for the weekend. If you know what's good for you, you'll make it your soundtrack as well.

I think I'll make a habit of this and post a new one every Friday.

Yes. I think I will.

(zip) MP3 Shuffle #1 (56 mb)

Bloodbath - "The Fathomless Mastery" (2008)

My opinion of Bloodbath's latest album still stands. Here's what I had to say when ranking the best albums of 2008:
A great, great album but compared to their previous efforts it's a major disappointment. That catchy quality, the hits, are entirely gone. Brutality just for the sake of it, riffs that go nowhere. Too much Florida, not enough Stockholm, if you know what I mean.

Compared to the rest of the catalog, that is. Compared to the rest of the death metal bands today, this is premium class A shit.
Yes, a good album indeed, just not very memorable. And the album cover is atrocious. These three songs are brilliant though:

(mp3) Bloodbath - Slaughtering the will to live (highly recommended!)
(mp3) Bloodbath - Mock the cross
(mp3) Bloodbath - Hades rising

Inglorious Basterds trailer

After the miscarriage and utter shitfest known as Death Proof, Tarantino's career can be on the way up.

Update: Dozens of people have dowloaded this song thinking it's the one in the trailer. It's not, douchebags. Does that sound even remotely like Trouble?

Update #2: THIS IS NOT THE SONG IN THE TRAILER, YOU FUCKING RETARDS! Goddammit.

(mp3) Trouble - Bastards will pay
Available on Psalm 9 (1984)

Big Business - "Tour EP III" (2008)

While we wait for the mighty Business' third album (Mind The Drift, released in April), here's their most recent tour ep.

They have a habit of making one of these before each album and sell them at gigs as a little teaser. These always include songs that later turn up in the album proper in re-recorded versions, as well as songs that get left off the album.

On this one Send Me A Postcard, a brilliant cover of a Shocking Blue song, is most likely the one that won't be included on Mind The Drift.

These tour eps are usually pretty rough around the edges, with songs basically in demo form. But seeing how this is their best sounding and most well-produced tour ep yet, will they really be recorded all over again?

These three songs sound just as good as anything on the last album, the monumental Here Come The Waterworks (declared the second best album of 2007 on this very blog, and if I say so it's the truth), so there would be little reason to change anything.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

(mp3) Big Business - Cold lunch
(mp3) Big Business - The drift (highly recommended!)
(mp3) Big Business - Send me a postcard

Songs That Get My Juices Flowing #45

ChrisGoesRock, possibly the best and most reliable music blog the internet has ever seen, was deleted by Blogspot.

Along with Time Has Told Me, no other blog has done a better job educating me on rock history. It's well known by now how blogger (by way of Google) has been deleting blog posts without warning, but deleting entire blogs just like that? That's fucked up.

The new, resurrected blog can be found here.

Good work, boys. Stellar effort.

As if any list produced by Metal Hammer wouldn't be bad enough, it's German Metal Hammer. A list composed by people from a country that in the entire history of music has produced precisely eight good bands.

And none of them have released something listenable since about 1989.

Well done. Your mothers must be proud.

See the post below for the correct #1.

Corrosion Of Conformity - "America's Volume Dealer" (2000)

In 2009 I will:

  • Start smoking a pipe to appear more masculine and worldly. Not sure about a smoke jacket, I'll look into it.

  • Wear Hawaiian shirts just because.

  • Use tissues when I blow my nose instead of covering one nostril and using the other as a snot ejaculator.

  • Get more ink done.

  • Learn to cook something other than curry risotto and my signature meatballs. Two dishes I have fine tuned to perfection, I might add.

  • Get a damn job and a life. And a letter from Jandek.

(mp3) Corrosion Of Conformity - Stare too long
    (mp3) Corrosion Of Conformity - 13 angels
(mp3) Corrosion Of Conformity - Steady roller (highly recommended!)
